Jane Sadler - Specialist Speech & Language Therapist Rainbow Centre

Jane Sadler joined ERS Rainbow Centre as specialist speech and language therapist in September 2006. She is a registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, and the Health Professionals Council, and has a Cert Ed and M Phil degree in speech. She trained as a SLT after working for 15 years as a fully qualified teacher, having seen the critical role speech, language and communication plays in the social, emotional and cognitive development of her pupils.

Since then Jane has had wide experience of children with a range of speech, language and communication difficulties. She worked for three years as a teacher therapist in a language unit in a school for children with moderate learning difficulties in Northumberland before becoming a university lecturer. During this period of her career she supervised teachers and SLT students first at Newcastle then Sheffield University. Here Jane directed a web-based distance learning course on language and communication impairment in children for LSAs, teachers, SLTs and educational psychologists until July 2006. These years as a university lecturer were interspersed with periods when she returned to the ‘grass roots’, working as peripatetic SLT in mainstream primary schools in New Zealand, and as Key Stage 3 SLT at an ICAN specialist language school, where she had responsible also for literacy development throughout the school.

Over the years, Jane has attended numerous short courses and workshops (e.g. on Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Dyspraxia, Swallowing Disorders, Dyslexia, Specific Language Impairment, Metaphon, Hanon, Derbyshire Language Scheme, Lidcombe Dysfluency Programme). She has organised and presented at several large conferences, run workshops for teachers and parents, and is co-editor of three books (with Dr Kay Bevan), a CD-Rom on child language development for parents and teachers (with Dr Judy Clegg), and has written several journal articles.
